This Is My Island Job is a creative project that has caught the imagination of so many people, but only a small portion of it is actually getting done. I want you to think about what I have been doing for the last 16 years and I think it will take a lot of work to get it done. I am the only person who has ever called myself a “catering person”.
I have been a caterer for two years now, so I have a few ideas of how to make this happen. I have been looking for a catering job for as long as I can remember and I have been so fortunate that so many people like me have applied and I have found the perfect place for me—coney island.
At caterers, you use all the food you can find to make a meal. This is called a “consignment”. It’s something most caterers are reluctant to do because it costs a lot of money, but I have to say that the service I get from my clients is more than just food. It’s more like a service for the customer, of course.
Consignment jobs are like mini restaurants in that you get to eat a lot of delicious food and also use a lot of it to make a meal. The coney island job is a restaurant called the caterer, and it’s a small chain. Its only location is in New Orleans. It’s just one of many restaurants in the city, but it’s one of the few that actually make food that tastes like it was made at home, rather than being served from the kitchen of a restaurant.
The coney island job was founded by Mike Conley in the early 90s in New Orleans. He’s the one who decided to change the name from Mike’s Restaurant to Coney Island because he always wanted to make a restaurant that tasted home-cooked and not the restaurant of a million different restaurants serving the same dishes on a menu. He worked on the concept for a number of years, but finally decided to close the restaurant in 2001.
I love Mike Conley, and I used to make a lot of his dishes for a while before he died. But I was really sad to see him go. I don’t think I’d find it hard to pick up again, now that I have my own business.
So I’m not sure how a new restaurant would work out, but I can imagine it would be quite a challenge to get Coney Island to taste like home.
Actually if anyone has any idea if a coney island job is possible, I would love to hear it.
