As a biostatistician, you are one of the most important experts on statistics. You get to make your mark on the world and help people see a new and better way of doing things. You are an expert in statistics, not only in understanding population statistics, but how they can be used to drive research and policy-making. You are also an expert in statistical inference, which is the process of identifying the causes and effects of statistical observations.
Biostatisticians have an incredibly broad role. One of the goals of the Biostatistics Curriculum at Duke is to create a career that is “as close to a full-time job as you can imagine”. But not all biostatisticians find this goal too far-fetched because they can also find ways to combine this academic passion with their day-to-day jobs.
I have a friend who is a biostatistician. He is a big fan of the field, but he is also a huge fan of movies. He always has something in his office that has a video clip with him saying, “Wow… that explains that.” And he also has a large collection of movie posters.
